Validating auralizations by using articulation indexes

چکیده
In this paper, computer modeling auralizations are validated by using articulation indexes. As it is well known, one of the main challenges in validating an auralization is how to find an objective metrics to evaluate its quality. The generation of acoustical virtual reality is done by the proprietary computer code RAIOS (Room Acoustics Integrated and Optimized Software), which includes sets of artificial neural networks (ANNs) that models the head-related impulse responses (HRIRs). As output, the computer code furnishes the binaural impulse responses (BIRs) at selected positions in the room. Convolving these BIRs with anechoic signals containing a list of monosyllables, virtual auralizations are provided. These can be applied to subjects to obtain virtual articulation indexes. On the other hand, the articulation test applied in the actual room to the same subjects provides actual articulation indexes. This is done in two university classrooms. The results show that an error lower than 2.5% is found when actual and corresponding virtual articulation indexes are compared. The conclusions are that the auralizations performed by the computer code RAIOS with the ANNs succeed and that the articulation index is a reliable metrics to validate auralizations.

Room Acoustics Computer Modeling: Study of the Effect of Source Directivity on Auralizations
Auralizations are very useful in the design of performing arts spaces, where auralization is the process of rendering audible the sound field in a space, in such a way as to simulate the binaural listening experience at a given position in the modeled space. One of the fundamental modeling inputs to create auralizations is the source directivity. Standard methods involve inputting the measured ...
متن کاملOn Studying Auditory Distance Perception in Concert Halls with Multichannel Auralizations
Virtual acoustics and auralizations have been previously used to study the perceptual properties of concert hall acoustics in a descriptive profiling framework. The results have indicated that the apparent auditory distance to the orchestra might play a crucial role in enhancing the listening experience and the appraisal of hall acoustics. However, it is unknown how the acoustics of the hall in...
متن کاملDirectivity of musical instruments in a real performance situation
Measurements of the directivity of musical instruments are presented in the context of a new directivity representation of sources for auralizations. Three instruments have been recorded over the whole compass simultaneously in both horizontal and vertical planes with a multimicrophone array. Results are analyzed focusing on the differences between the directivity of particular tones and the av...
متن کاملValidation of railway electric simulator using scale and slope performance indexes
When validating simulation models against experimental data, model adequacy and accuracy is quantitatively measured by performance indexes that quantify various kinds of distances between vectors: amplitude, slope, peaks, etc. Selected performance indexes are used to validate a simulation model against experimental data characterized by a very low uncertainty for the specific application, i.e. ...
متن کاملObjective and Subjective Evaluation of the Use of Directional Sound Sources in Auralizations
Omni-directional sources are often used in room acoustic computer simulations, as opposed to directional sources, since measured directivity data are quite limited and difficult to obtain. The purpose of this study is to investigate the objective and subjective significance of adding more complex directivity to the sources used in computer simulations and auralizations. A simple hall was used a...
